We are Local 390 of the American Federation of Musicians of the United
States and Canada, an international union representing professional musicians.
While we are affiliated with other organizations in the trade/labour union
arena, most of our members are indepedent contractors, so we provide services
similar to other professional associations such as those which represent
accountants, lawyers or doctors.
Our charter was granted in 1907 and this has been a very active location
for live music, recordings and television/film production. This Association
provides many important services which protect musicians, facilitate networking
and allow access to a very strong pension plan and vital resources such as
instrument/gear insurance. Along with local and international newsletters
and special access to members' areas of websites, we provide a free
referral service and support in the writing and enforcing of contracts.
Special AFM work visas are available for Canadian musicians going to the
US and even
transportation of valuable instruments in the cabin of an airliner is facilitated
through our intervention.
As the Local with the largest geographic area in the Federation, we have
extensive experience with a huge variety of musical styles and with musicians
from many cultures and all age groups.

Neighbouring Rights And Private Copying Royalties
Amendments to the Copyright Act of Canada implemented in 1997 created for performers the right to receive royalties from the broadcast, public performance or private copying of sound recordings on which they had performed. The new regime resulted in the formation of the Neighbouring Rights Collective of Canada (NRCC), now Re:Sound, and the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC).
From 1998 to 2009, the CFM distributed to its musician assignors royalties received by Re:Sound and CPCC under tariffs approved by the Copyright Board of Canada. In 2009, the associated rights and responsibilities were transferred to MROC, and in 2025 a further transfer to Artisti.
Neighbouring rights royalties are paid retroactively to 1998 whereas royalties derived from the private copying levy are paid retroactively to 2000. If you are a recording artist or musician who has not yet assigned your rights to a copyright collective, you may be entitled to royalty revenue from the broadcast, public performance or private copying of sound recordings on which your performances are embodied. To assign your rights or to obtain further information contact:
